A motorcyclist's attempt to evade police at speeds of up to 170kmh on Monday morning came to an end when he ran out of petrol in Oamaru.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said police first saw the speeding motorcycle travelling north near Lake Waihola.
A short pursuit was abandoned due to the speed and nature of the man's driving, Sgt Woodbridge said.
''Another police [officer] spotted the same motorbike north of Dunedin, near the Kilmog, and initiated red and blue lights, but it took off at high speed again,'' he said.
That pursuit was also abandoned due to ''dangerous'' speeds and the nature of the driving.
The motorcycle was located again at 10.15am by police in Oamaru at the BP 2 Go Service Station in Wansbeck St.
A 49-year-old Dunedin man has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.
