Trust-run theatre a likely option: mayor

A movie theatre operated by a trust may be the only way North Otago residents will be able to watch feature films on the big screen regularly, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher says.

Oamaru's sole movie theatre, Limelight Cinema, closed on October 25 last year.

Patrons were told initially the four-screen cinema was closed for ''maintenance'', but a spokesman for the owner's family told the Otago Daily Times in November the facility was shut due to the owner's illness.

Since then, movie-goers from Oamaru and the surrounding area have been forced to travel to the likes of Waimate or Timaru for their silver-screen fix.

Mr Kircher said Oamaru had the ''population and enough interest to justify a movie theatre of some description'', but how that would be run was not as clear.

''There are a number of models that could be followed, but exactly what that would look like would need to be discussed.

''There have been a number of approaches to council from different individuals wanting to meet the council.

''We have looked at some options, but it's trying to find the right one and, most importantly, the right space to do it.''

One option was the about 100-seat Inkbox at the Oamaru Opera House.

However, it was considered by the council to be problematic as other events were often staged there, and there were the costs associated with staffing.

Mr Kircher said another, more likely, option was the possibility of a trust becoming involved, similar to the one that runs the Regent Theatre in Waimate.

The Waimate Regent Theatre Trust, established in the 1980s, invested more than $100,000 in a digital projector and sound system for the theatre in 2016.

The theatre is operated by volunteers and has proved popular with movie buffs from south of the Waitaki River since Limelight shut its doors.

Whether a group in Oamaru would be willing to invest in such a venture was not known.

''Whether it's run by an individual or the effort of a group ... you need to have people with very particular skills running it.''

The Waitaki District Youth Council has staged outdoor movie nights at Friendly Bay in the past.

More recently, a selected range of movies has been shown at Victorian-themed tourism attraction Whitestone City in Harbour St.
