Zeb the Zebra - alias Helen Algar - is on a campaign to improve pedestrian-crossing safety.

During the past week, in her specially-made zebra costume, she has been visiting North Otago schools to educate children on using pedestrian crossings safely.

She has also been on pedestrian crossings around Oamaru to highlight the issue with motorists.

"It's been very effective," Mrs Algar said about the reaction to her outfit.

"It has also highlighted pedestrian safety to children."

The programme is being run by Waitaki community safety officer Alison Banks in conjunction with Sport Waitaki where Mrs Algar is the active transport co-ordinator.

At schools, children are taught the three basic keys to pedestrian safety - stop and look both ways, listen and make and maintain eye contact with drivers.
