Runners from throughout Otago, the New Zealand Defence force and police have been invited to compete in an enlarged annual Kelly's Canter race from the Palmerston town centre up Puketapu (343m) and back on Sunday.

Schools from throughout East Otago have also been invited to compete.

The race is organised by the Palmerston Lions club. Registration begin at 1pm. The race starts at 2pm.

A market in the Palmerston town centre will be held from 10am. Spokeswoman Beth Clark, from the Palmerston Playcentre, said nine market stalls had so far been registered.

More were expected, she said.
