Donald Trump, The Evil Queen and Snow White all made an appearance at the recent Waitaki Boys’ High School’s annual Scrano Cultural Competition.

Competition was fierce at the secondary school’s annual inter-house competition with each of the four houses — Don, Lee, Sutherland and Forrester — presenting a drama, choir and kapa haka performance.

The school’s auditorium was packed out for two nights with families and friends eager to see the boys in various guises.

School rector Darryl Paterson said "he wasn’t sure what to say" after he was roasted by students playing him in the role of rector in the first hour of the drama competition.

Students Ned Newlands-Carter (Lee) and Jakob Rohrbach (Forrester) both played rectors in their house plays, Wayne’s World and Wabbit season at Milner Park respectively.

"They had my mannerisms down pat," Mr Paterson said.

Forrester took first place in drama judged by Patt Gunn.

The play, written by Will Simpson and directed by Jack Strachan, had many students playing comedic caricatures of their teachers at WBHS, as the Rector declared war after crater-like holes appear on Milner field caused by Bugs Bunny (Chase Kennedy) and his fellow rabbits (Josh Groot and Jack Jamieson).

In keeping with previous years, the show featured hundreds of boys in absurd costumes.

In the Sutherland house play Once Upon a Crime, Donald Trump (Hunter Whyte), Cinderella (John Martin), Snow White ( Olly Wickham), The Evil Queen (Oskar Brienesse-Little) and the Detectives (Will Dukes, Blake Van Der Spek and Manu Fisilau) also drew a lot of laughs from the audience.

Lee house play Wayne’s World starred Wayne (Liam Hayes) and Garth (James Soal) who have a popular podcast that catches the attention of the Rector.

The play also featured a clever parody of musician Robert Palmer’s Simply Irresistible music video and an understated and funny Cassandra played by Ike Newlands-Carter.

Don House’s The Great Heist had some true-to-form moments of what boarders face when the hunger pangs get the better of them after school’s out, and the hunt for biscuits begins.

Forrester House also took first place with their kapa haka performance, judged by Te Rūnanga o Moeraki Upoko David Higgins.

Jahlin Marsters-Taupo, of Sutherland house, was awarded best kaea for the haka.

First place in choir, judged by Helen Beckinsale, went to Sutherland House with their set piece of Slice of Heaven by Dave Dobbyn and chosen piece Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley.

Sutherland House won the competition overall with 217 points, second place was Forrester House (212), third place was Lee House (209) and in fourth was Don House (164 points).

Award for best student director went to Jack Strachan (Forrester House), best small group singing: Lee House, and best accompanist was shared by Lee House (Andrew Isi Manu) and Sutherland House (Bruce Kaufana).

The students also hit the stage and spread out into the aisles of the hall to perform a rousing school haka for the audience.

Mr Paterson thanked the judges and performing arts co-ordinators Laura Keep and Erin Matthews for their participation and efforts.
