Approval for school relocation expected

Whether the Cabinet will confirm the long-awaited relocation of the Wanaka Primary School can go ahead should be known in the next three weeks.

Wanaka Primary School board chairman Pete Bullen is encouraging the parents of present and prospective pupils to mark September 10 on their calendars.

"That is D-day. There should be no valid reason why an answer that the community has been waiting three long years for shouldn't be forthcoming."

He said the Ministry of Education had consistently stalled attempts by the school's board of trustees to find out when the relocation and building of a new primary school would proceed.

Chris Collins, a private secretary to Chris Carter, the Minister of Education, has advised the board of trustees that a cabinet paper on the school's property relocation will be received this week.

The paper will be discussed by a committee on government expenditure on September 3 and referred to the Cabinet meeting on September 8.

Official minutes of that meeting will be publicly available by September 10, Ms Collins has told Mr Bullen.

The long-time Wanaka Primary School advocate said he hoped a decision would support the hundreds of hours of voluntary labour put into the design process by the members of the Wanaka board of trustees and school staff.

The group has developed a future-proofed "master plan", which, it is hoped, will develop primary education in Wanaka to its full potential during the next decade.

A lack of information from the Ministry of Education galvanised Mr Bullen to seek clarification about when a decision would be made.

Cabinet approval is needed to pave the way for the school's relocation to a Scurr Heights site in Wanaka.
