Visitor options open from new Walter Peak zone

New visitor experiences are being planned for one of Queenstown’s most special pieces of land.

The Environment Court has just ratified the Walter Peak Rural Tourism Zone, following four years’ mediation between RealNZ, which owns the high country farm, and the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

RealNZ chief executive Dave Beeche said the decision meant new visitor experiences could now be developed — those would be revealed ‘‘in due course’’ — along with a strong commitment to the protection and regeneration of Walter Peak’s natural ecosystems.

RealNZ, formerly Real Journeys, had leased the land and operated tours at Walter Peak since the 1960s, before officially purchasing the 155ha site in 2013, after which it began major restoration projects.

Mr Beeche said the new zoning aligned strongly with the company’s long-term vision for the high country farm.

‘‘Walter Peak is an extraordinary place and we acknowledge the responsibility that comes with caring for such a special part of our taiao,’’ he said.

‘‘We are committed to ensuring that the development of new visitor experiences enhances and protects the natural environment, both now and for future generations,’’ he said.

‘‘Alongside any future visitor experiences, we are already investing in reforestation and pest control to support the return of native flora and fauna.’’

Mr Beeche said RealNZ was now finalising its vision and strategy for Walter Peak, and would be engaging with key stakeholders during the planning process.
