The 32-strong New Zealand Army Band has confirmed it will perform at the Arrowtown 150 Years of Gold celebrations at Labour Weekend.

Co-originator Julie Hughes said she was "honoured" to have the band play at "such a special occasion".

The band was last in the resort in 2007 when it performed during the Arrowtown Autumn Festival.

"This provides the event with top-level performers which we know the community will enjoy," Mrs Hughes said.

The New Zealand Army Band will perform a variety of free shows utilising its full band along with their dance and marching bands.

It will perform in Arrowtown on October 20 from noon to 1pm and as part of the official opening ceremony at Butler's Green at 2.45pm that day.

Late that night a smaller eight-piece dance band would perform at the Anniversary Ball, Mrs Hughes said.

Its final performance will be on October 21 at the Town and Country Day, with the marching band in action from noon to 1pm on the Millbrook Corner.

Mrs Hughes said the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in the region would also feature a "huge re-enactment" featuring more than 200 actors, with horses and wagons, along with Chinese celebrations.
