Backs of buses to promote safe driving messages

Drivers visiting over the summer period who end up behind local buses in Queenstown will be able to read some driving tips, courtesy of the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

From next month, the back of three Connectabuses will feature striking themed advertisements with key road safety messages.

Those are to wear seat belts, keep left and not overtake on yellow lines.

The advertisements, which support the national campaign driven by the New Zealand Transport Authority and the New Zealand Police, will remain on the back of the buses throughout January and February.

In this month's council newsletter, Scuttlebutt, Mayor Vanessa van Uden said locals and regular visitors could set a good example to those unfamiliar with the roading network by driving considerately and being patient during the busy summer period.

''I think it's worth remembering that everyone who brings a camper van or a rental car to this area is our guest.

''They may sometimes do things that we find odd or frustrating, like driving slowly while they work out where they're going or hesitating at roundabouts, but we should be making our guests welcome and remember that they also support our businesses while they're here.''

Along with the bus advertisements, the council was producing a single-page ''ready reference guide'' to driving in the district and other popular destinations in the lower South Island.

Copies would be distributed to rental car companies and accommodation providers, plus be available online from the council's website.
