Big interest in 150th

The committee organising the 150th celebration of the discovery of gold in the Nevis Valley is calling for more members as interest in the event heats up.

When the Otago Daily Times spoke to committee member Lex McLean earlier this month, he said planning was well under way but more people were needed to share their stories about gold-mining in the region.

Mr McLean said since that story appeared in the ODT he had received "about 20" calls from people all over the country.

"Mostly elderly women talking about their grandparents.

"One guy from Dunedin recognised his grandfather's name [from one of the photos]. All he knew was that he had been in Nevis."

Mr McLean said he was giving people information he had already collected to read and then they would write about their family's involvement.

It appeared the committee would have to provide more facilities, such as toilets, to cater for the extra people expected to attend.
