Police in Wanaka are trying to track down a man and woman involved in an altercation early yesterday morning, amid concerns one of the pair may be seriously injured.
Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said staff at Wanaka Minimart on Ardmore St contacted police about 5am yesterday after discovering a large amount of blood on the convenience store's window and the ground outside.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area and saw a male and female leave Post Office Lane about 1.50am and enter into a physical dispute outside the minimart. They appeared to fall over near the window, Snr Sgt Grindell said.
Another two people - a female and a male wearing a sombrero - then intervened, before the first pair left the scene. The volume of blood left behind suggested one of the people involved in the argument may have suffered a head injury, Snr Sgt Grindell said.
''We'd be interested in identifying that couple just to make sure everyone's all right, for a start.''
Police had hoped the sombrero worn by the second man might help identify those involved. However, Mexican Cinco de Mayo celebrations at the weekend meant ''there might be more than one person around town wearing sombreros''.
Police planned to view further CCTV footage from the bars in Post Office Lane.
