Auckland-based Dick Frizzell is one of New Zealand's most popular and influential artists.

His works on paper have been displayed in Milford Galleries Queenstown before, but the show Selected Paintings 1981-2009 was the first time an extensive survey collection had been exhibited in the resort, senior art consultant Jac Byron said.

Frizzell's art practice has spanned more than 40 years, and his works are held in all major public, corporate and private collections in New Zealand.

He has completed some major commissions, including works for SkyCity Casino in Auckland and a painting of an Ansett New Zealand aeroplane for Starship Children's Hospital.

A retrospective exhibition of his work, Dick Frizzell: Portrait of a Serious Artiste, toured major national institutions in 1997. He wrote Dick Frizzell: The Painter, which was published in 2009.

Frizzell will create a 5m banner of support for the All Blacks, as part of the Te Unga Mai voyaging festival, within the REAL New Zealand Festival, in the Gisborne area.
