Café food store proposed

A new "food experience" business has been proposed for a building on the outskirts of Wanaka which previously housed a now defunct café operation.

Wanaka woman Sharyn Mathias, of Florence's Foodstore and Café Limited, has applied for consent to open a café and food store in the former Café Fe premises on the corner of Orchard and Cardrona Valley Rds in Heritage Park.

The building is owned by James Ledgerwood and OND Trustees Limited.

Café Fe closed last year.

Ms Mathias wants a variation to the existing resource consent - which permits a café activity - for the premises to include the retail aspect of her proposal.

The food store would offer shelf-foods, including the applicant's own-brand product, fresh foods such as breads, cheese, eggs and local produce, frozen meals, food tastings and food-related products such as books, tea-towels and napkins, all in an "emporium-like setting".

The proposal involves no external changes to the building and no structural changes internally.

"The idea of the food store is to be a whole food experience with many displays and tastings. A time to linger and enjoy," Ms Mathias wrote in her application.

She said the business would be an asset for residents of Heritage Park and guests of Grand Mercure Oakridge Resort across the road from the café.
