The area occupied by the Outlet camping ground at Wanaka will be formalised by the Wanaka Community Board, which is keen to enter into leasing agreements with the operators.
For many years, the camp has occupied parts of council reserve near the Clutha River Outlet.
The board has agreed to publicly notify its intention to lease some of the reserve for the purposes of extending the camping area.
A hearings panel of three people will be appointed to hear submissions and prepare a report to the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
Terms and conditions of the leases will be agreed by the council's property sub-committee.
If no submissions are received, the board will recommend the leases be granted, subject to terms and conditions and subject to receiving consent from the Minister of Conservation.
The council will also prepare a landscape plan that will show, among other things, where the reserve can be improved and the proposed lease areas.
The Outlet camp is managed by Glenn Tattersall and Tracey Addison and is mostly on privately owned land.
