Cliff tests completed

Geotechnical testing at a rockslide at Glendhu Bluffs near Wanaka to determine the stability of a cliff face has been completed by council contractors.

Motorists travelling to Treble Cone skifield and the Matukituki Valley may still face minor traffic delays as the site is tidied up, Queenstown Lakes District Council engineering and roading contractor manager Stafford Whitfield said.

Remedial work is needed to repair damaged road seal and replace a guard rail at the site.

A geotechnical engineer had assessed the cliff face and tested the stability of a large overhanging boulder at the site, Mr Whitfield said.

Contractors from EDI Downer had conducted an unsuccessful "pull test" - which snapped a wire rope attached to a digger - as efforts were made to determine whether the boulder might be dislodged.

The geotechnical assessment had determined the boulder at the site was stable, Mr Whitfield said.

Some loose debris and hanging vegetation was still being cleared from the site. The roading reseal would be programmed into a future schedule, he said.
