Wanaka's new sport climbing club, Wanaka Cliffhangers, will host the first round of the New Zealand National Cup competition at Clip 'N Climb Basecamp Wanaka Climbing Centre on April 2-3.

The club was formed late last year to support many young climbers taking part in Clip 'N Climb's after-school camps, secretary Fiona Hezinger said.

The competition would attract about 90 climbers and their supporters to Wanaka for the weekend, with at least 10 Wanaka climbers likely to take part in the spectator-friendly event. The club held a local competition trial late last year, in which about 35 climbers took part, Mrs Hezinger said.

New Zealand's top age-group climber, Finn Fairbairn (14), of Wanaka, is taking a year off sport climbing to do other sports, but had decided to compete in the Wanaka round to support the new club, Mrs Hezinger said.

Finn is a veteran of five Oceania Championships and last year made a clean sweep of under-14 age group sections of the Oceania Championships, the New Zealand Championships and the New Zealand National Cup.

Clip 'N Climb chief instructor Loz Ogle said several Mt Aspiring College sport climbers were making great progress and were keen for their first competition at national cup level. They include Callum Carbon (14), Stefan Schwarz (14) and exchange student Stephan Vogt (16), of Germany.

"They have only recently started but are showing a lot of natural ability and a good attitude to bettering themselves. This is good because climbing isn't only about competing and they are keen on climbing recreationally and competitively, Mr Ogle said.

Holding a national competition would be "fantastic" for the whole climbing community, including younger children who wanted to take part in the under-12 section, Mr Ogle said.

The incorporation of the club is a positive move for the sport, which has had to regroup after the town's first commercial climbing business folded several years ago.

It is the seventh sports climbing club to be affiliated with Climbing New Zealand. The other clubs are in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Wellington, Christchurch and Nelson.

Mrs Hezinger said Wanaka Cliffhangers would be able to fundraise and provide opportunities for members to compete at other centres.
