The Arrowtown community is rallying round to help a local child diagnosed with lung cancer.

Angus Beaton (4) was diagnosed last week and will undergo chemotherapy at Christchurch hospital this week.

When the news hit Arrowtown last Monday, friends and strangers to the Beaton family pulled together to help Angus, his parents Gordon and Fritha and his sister Kate (6).

When Mrs Beaton heard and received the many letters, calls and saw photos of the working bee set up at their Arrowtown home in the weekend, she was "blown away".

"The amount of work that has been done . . . We appreciate it so much. It's so heartwarming, so lovely.

"It is absolutely overwhelming the amount of support that has come from the Arrowtown community.

"Angus got a big basket of goodies from preschool and a huge card. It makes a difference to us."

Last Saturday and Sunday, one neighbour organised a working bee at the Beaton family home and a close friend of Mrs Beaton, Jeannie Hamilton, said the place was left looking like a showroom.

"A lot of people in this town are really good at organising," Mrs Hamilton said.

Tonight, a meeting will be held at Mrs Hamilton's Fork and Tap bar and restaurant for those willing to help put together more fundraising ideas for the Beatons, while both parents stay in Christchurch with Angus.

The meeting will start at 7.30pm.

An account for Angus and his family was set up by friends and the community through the ASB Bank to help alleviate the financial uncertainty they could face.

Mrs Hamilton said people could make one-off or automatic payments to the "Angus Beaton Appeal" account to aid the family in treatment options and for loss of income.

When the Otago Daily Times contacted Mrs Beaton, she had only heard of the account and was overwhelmed at how her home town had rallied to help.

"It's hard to say thank you to everyone, because we don't know who and how many people we are saying thank you to.

"The support is just phenomenal."

She added that Ronald McDonald house in Christchurch had been hugely important to her and the family this week.

The family were grateful for the many cards and messages of support they had received from their friends and the Arrowtown community.

Donations can be made to the Angus Beaton Appeal through internet banking. or at ASB Remarkables and Queenstown offices.
