Couple in lucky escape after van hits black ice

A Queenstown couple was lucky to escape more serious injury from a crash on the Devil's Staircase yesterday after hitting black ice.

Sergeant Blair Duffy, of Queenstown Police, said the couple was driving from Invercargill to Queenstown at about 11am when the van struck black ice on an S bend at the Devil's Staircase.

The driver lost control of the van and it struck a bank on the left -hand side. Fortunately it was travelling at low speed, Sgt Duffy said.

The 49-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital with moderate head injuries.
