While world records remained just out of reach, competitors in Saturday's dyno wall-climbing competition in Wanaka leapt and lunged their way to some impressive distances.

The event was held as part of the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival, which began in Wanaka last Friday and finishes tomorrow.

Climbing complex Basecamp hosted the competition, in which about 20 entrants launched themselves off small foot-holds on an overhanging wall towards another higher hold, which was increasingly moved further away from the starting point.

Dyno wall climbing featured at the festival several years ago, but it was the first time Basecamp had been involved in the event, owner Clay Garrett said.

"I had no idea how many people were going to show up ... it was fantastic to have the turnout that we did."

The women's competition was won by Julie Robinson,of Wanaka, with a distance of 1.7m.

In the men's competition, Lake Hawea competitor and previous Wanaka dyno competition winner David Walden chalked up an impressive 2.25m jump.
