'Exquisite' oil pastel people's choice

An oil pastel of a woman in a petticoat called Dancer, by Queenstown artist Mark Zhu, has been announced as viewer's choice award winner of the Locations Art Awards '09, hosted by the Queenstown Arts Society.

"It's just exquisite, wonderfully done and beautifully executed," society secretary Barbara Glass said.

"I should imagine it will go to one of the galleries in town."

The best of exhibition award and $2000 went to Queenstown's Jennifer Majeske for her oil painting titled Joan of Arc.

Ms Majeske also won the best of theme (faces) Art Zone Dunedin award and $500 for the piece.

Undulating Look, by Lake Hayes artist Kerry Murray, was named best contemporary and she won $500.

Queenstown's Jackie Chatfield won the second theme Ivan Clarke Gallery award and $300 for An Evening Out, an acrylic on canvas.

The second contemporary Artbay Gallery award of $350 went to Queenstown artist Dawn Glynn for acrylic This Way & That Way.

The Paper Plus merit award and $300 voucher was awarded to Dunedin artist Brian Morris for his charcoal drawing Otago Harbour From Burkes, while the Framing Studio merit award and $300 voucher was given to Glenorchy artist Amanda Hasselman for her machine stitching on original painting called Head of the Lake.
