The residents called 111 and two Queenstown Fire Brigade appliances attended the blaze, on Caples Pl, about 4pm.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire in the kitchen.
Senior Station Officer Doug Smith said half of the kitchen had been extensively damaged by fire.
"Everyone's all good. It could have been a lot worse," Mr Smith said.
