Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said the bones were discovered by a Kingston resident on Thursday night, close to the base of the town's wharf.
A scene examination was conducted and the bones then removed and examined by an anthropologist from the university.
On January 31, 2011, contractors unearthed bones while building a slipway for a boat to be launched from Kingston.
At the time, word had spread rapidly about the discovery of the bones, initially thought to be human and possibly those of 2-year-old Amber-Lee Cruickshank, who has not been seen since October 17, 1992.
Those bones also were found to have been those of an animal, possibly a sheep.
