No major disruptions to traffic flow are expected as a result of the resealing of up to 4km of State Highway 6A/Frankton Rd next month, New Zealand Transport Agency Central Otago area manager John Jarvis says.
The Otago Daily Times reported earlier this month much of Frankton Rd would be targeted by NZTA over the coming months - part of the road needed to be resealed after the chip seal failed over winter, while other parts were programmed for work this season.
Mr Jarvis said the exact start date for the resealing work, which would focus on a section of road from Yewlett Cres to Suburb St, would be confirmed next month, with that work to be done by DownerEDI.
"Downer is carrying out remedial work to sections of seal they laid earlier this year, at their cost.
"Meanwhile, Fulton Hogan is resurfacing, under a new $500,000 contract, further sections of the highway towards Queenstown."
Mr Jarvis said the work would generally be carried out between 7am and 5.30pm with two-way traffic flow in place to minimise disruptions to motorists.
"Some short delays are inevitable, particularly at property entrances.
"During the few times where two-way traffic cannot be maintained, the work will be done at night, or during off-peak traffic times.
"A letter explaining the work will be hand-delivered in the next week to affected businesses and households."
Mr Jarvis said accommodation providers would also be contacted in person by the contractor as the work approached their premises.
It was hoped the resurfacing work could be completed by Christmas, depending on the weather.
"We appreciate there will be some inconvenience for motorists, but they can look forward to a better road surface once this job is completed.
"Cycle lanes are also being put in as part of the work."
Further resurfacing work on State Highway 6A is planned from Suburb St to Ballarat St in early 2012.
Further details will be released closer to the time.
