Helicopter submissions to close this month

Queenstown Lakes District residents have until June 30 to lodge their submissions on an application by a commercial helicopter operator to land and take off from 119 sites across the area.

Alpine Choppers Ltd was seeking resource consent from the council in a 345-page application, received by Lakes Environmental last month.

The proposed environment was so vast, it was separated into six groups, which detailed the number of landings proposed for each site into maximum daily, maximum summer monthly and maximum winter monthly landings.

The 119 sites include Macetown, Ben Lomond, Cecil Peak ledge, Rats Nest Hut, Routeburn Flat hut and station, Double Cone, Cardrona Ski Field, AJ Hackett Wine House and Deep Creek.

A total of 160 landings were planned for Deep Creek, which was the total number of landings allowed within a calendar year.

It was proposed there would be a maximum of two landings at the creek per day.

"It is proposed that some of their `airport' sites will fulfil their quota of annual landings within several months," the application stated.

"At other sites neither the daily, monthly or annual quota will be achieved.

"This application does not propose that unused landings at a particular site will be transferable to a more popular landing site."
