Lake level continues to fall

Lake Wakatipu continued to recede yesterday, measuring 311.312m at 3pm.

The Dart catchment received 15mm of rain on Monday, with Lake Wakatipu rising to 311.4m at 9am.

Otago Regional Council modelling predicted another rise in the lake level at 10pm yesterday, but instead the lake held steady, and began to recede again after midnight.

The next rainfall was expected tomorrow.

ORC environmental information and science director John Threlfall said new modelling runs would be carried out today once updated information had been received from MetService.

The modelling would take into account the level of Lake Wakatipu, which was receding about 8cm a day, the estimated rainfall and the timing of rainfall.

Based on the current rate at which the lake was receding, the level could hit 310.8m, the first flood-warning level, by Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
