Pupils at Hawea Flat School emulated Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary's look yesterday, to mark the 60th anniversary of his historic ascent of the world's highest peak, on May 29, 1953.
The school's teaching staff and its 155 pupils, including (front, from left) Kanuka Elms (6), Casey Irwin and Luca Harrington (both 9), participated in a ''dress up as a climber day'' as part of their term-long study of great explorers.
There were plenty of ice axes, climbing ropes and woolly hats among the climbing kit on display, along with a beekeeper ensemble to reflect Sir Edmund's summer occupation.
The pupils are also gearing up for their school production Sir Ed You're A Legend on June 12 and 13, which follows the late mountaineer's story from his days at Auckland Grammar School through to his world-renowned explorations, and his work to help build schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people of Nepal.
Guides from Wanaka's Adventure Consultants have been communicating with the school via email during their recent Everest climb, and will visit the school on their return.
