Native environs inspires artist's work

Amisfield winery will be home to artist Rae West's first solo exhibition in Otago.

West's work is inspired by the native environment.

The resulting collection titled "Winged Illumination" opens at Amisfield Winery and Bistro on Monday and will run for a month.

The largest work, Woolly Mammoth, is a creature that West claims enchanted and amazed her with its colour and hairy texture.

True to her appreciation of history and its place, West does considerable research to accurately depict her subjects.

She then uses paint washes, gold leaf and shellac to develop a richness and depth of canvas that create the ethereal quality of the scenes within which moths appear to float.

West has twice been a finalist in the CoCA Anthony Harper Art Award and has works gracing private collections both in New Zealand and around the world.

West lives in Hawkes Bay where she also indulges her passion for horse riding.
