
The incident was one of three cannabis-related arrests on Wednesday, Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said.
Officers on patrol in Main Rd, Waikouaiti, stopped a vehicle driven by a 35-year-old man at about 10.30pm, and when they stopped to speak to him, were hit with the pungent pong of marijuana.
The man quickly admitted to having a cannabis pipe in his car.
Police then began to search the vehicle, and it was then that he also admitted to having 5kgs of cannabis as well.
He told officers he had been heading to Invercargill to sell the hoard.
The man was arrested and the marijuana, as well as some other drugs, were seized.
He was charged with possessing a pipe for cannabis, possessing cannabis plant for supply, possession of methamphetamine and possession of cocaine.
The man was held in custody and would appear in Dunedin District Court today.
Earlier at 9.36pm, a 41-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly fleeing police and being in possession of cannabis and a knife.
Police found the woman driving her vehicle in Gordon Rd, Mosgiel, and recognised it as a car that had fled police earlier in the evening.
They signalled for her to stop and she complied.
When they spoke to the woman, they got a whiff of cannabis, and as a result searched the vehicle under the Search and Surveillance Act.
They found cannabis, and a knife in the driver’s door.
She was arrested and charged with failing to stop when followed by red and blue flashing lights, possession of cannabis, possession of an offensive weapon, and for refusing to undergo compulsory impairment tests.
She was bailed to appear in Dunedin District Court at a later date.
Earlier at 1.50pm police conducted a search warrant at a Ravensbourne address to look for a 34-year-old man who was wanted for dealing cannabis.
He was located, and a stash of cannabis was also allegedly located at the same time.
The man was arrested, charged with possession of cannabis for supply, and also received 12 more charged related to his selling and dealing of cannabis and other drugs.
He was held in police custody to appear in Dunedin District Court today.
