Proposed jetty would add access choice: developer

The developer of Queenstown's Kawarau Falls Station has applied to the Queenstown Lakes District Council to build a jetty on Lake Wakatipu.

Melview (Kawarau Falls Station) Developments Ltd (in receivership) has applied for land use to build the jetty adjoining land between two stage 1 buildings, known as Reserve North and Lakeside West.

The jetty would be built using existing piles installed for the development's water-pipe cooling system.

The 21m floating jetty would be an "embarkation point for a range of boating activities associated with the Kawarau Falls Station development".

It would be available for public use and as a pick-up or drop-off point for commercial boat trips.

It could be used by the public to participate in water activities or to view the lake, to enhance "the use of and enjoyment of the area and the lake".

It would be designed to cater for water taxis and to provide another transport option for visitors and workers at the development, and for patrons of the development's hotels to partake in water activities.

"The Kawarau Falls Station development will create the need for a jetty to provide for future transport links between Queenstown, Frankton and Remarkables Park."

The jetty would have no adverse effects on the environment or safety of other lake users.

"The foreshore in front of Kawarau Falls Station has been extensively modified and retains few natural qualities. The jetty is compatible with any remaining natural qualities and has been designed to be unobtrusive."

A Lakes Environmental planner has requested a landscape report before processing the application.
