Residents encouraged to apply for heritage grant

Residents who own a historical property or have protected trees on their land are being encouraged to apply for a heritage incentive grant by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The policy is designed to help with the costs of maintaining, protecting and preserving the natural and built heritage of the district.

A pot of $25,000 was allocated in the long-term plan at the start of the council's financial year, in July 2009.

About $21,000 remains and one application is a work in progress.

Applications go to council senior policy analyst Sue Mavor, who researches and reports to the council's property subcommittee for approval.

"It's important people take advantage of this fund to protect our community's heritage, which connects us to the past and future generations and contributes to our sense of identity," Ms Mavor said.

The next property subcommittee meeting was scheduled for April 8 to be followed by one on April 22.
