A pair of Queenstown veterinary surgeons say they are looking forward to pooling their knowledge with 1000 national and international delegates when they attend New Zealand's largest veterinary conference, in Hamilton, this week.

Dr Orla Fitzpatrick and Dr Lucy Gladwin, of Pets n Vets Queenstown, are heading to the New Zealand Veterinary Association conference, in the Claudelands Conference and Exhibition Centre.

The vets said many of the speakers and workshops covered the illnesses they treated everyday, including chronic kidney issues and hyperthyroidism. They were both particularly interested in feline medicine and surgery.

"It's good to know the most up-to-date approaches and latest studies," Dr Fitzpatrick said.

"Usually there's reps from all the food and drug companies, so we may find out about new medicines and meet other vets and hear their opinions."

Dr Gladwin said: "I'm interested in a talk on the vaccine and disease of feline Aids, or FIV. We're more aware of it and testing a lot more for it."

The multidisciplinary conference celebrates 250 years of veterinary endeavour this year, with speakers on 11 topics, three workshops, a welcome reception, gala dinner and golf tournament.

The conference was to be held in Christchurch until the February 22 earthquake damaged venues.
