Work on Wanaka's ''gateway'' roundabout at the intersection of Ardmore and Brownston Sts was completed yesterday, more than three years after the project was approved by the Wanaka Community Board.

Concerns about access to commercial premises at the intersection resulted in a drawn-out design process for the roundabout in which its start date repeatedly pushed back.

The design issues were resolved last year, and a $330,000 upgrade of the site's water, sewerage and stormwater pipelines - which were due for renewal - was completed before Christmas.

Fulton Hogan constructed the roundabout earlier this year and the landscaping took place during the past six weeks. Wanaka Landscapes owner Don McKinlay said 1250 shrubs and trees had been planted within the roundabout's central island and peripheral gardens.

He acknowledged landscape architect Annabel Riley for her ''brilliant design''.

Queenstown Lakes District Council Wanaka project manager Rob Darby said other than some additional signage, lighting, and hydro-seeding next spring, the roundabout project was now complete.

The work (excluding the pipe upgrade) had cost about $740,000. The New Zealand Transport Agency contributed about $336,000.

The roundabout had already proved to be ''extremely successful from a transport point of view'', Mr Darby said.
