She is described as the "heavy hitter" of the United States women's ski team and while all eyes may be on Lindsey Vonn during the forthcoming Winter Games NZ, the 24-year-old is treating it like any other event and trying not to become overwhelmed.

The 2009 overall alpine ski winner and double world champion, from Vail, Colorado, has been training at Coronet Peak since July 30 ahead of the inaugural Winter Games, which officially open on Friday.

The 14-strong US women's team and men's team, comprising 12 skiers, along with the Canadian team, have been using the skifield in their preparation for the event.

However, while Vonn said she was looking forward to the competition, which would be "fun", she was taking it one day at a time.

"If you put too much emphasis on it being special and unique, and the fact that you only get this opportunity once every four years, it becomes overwhelming.

"I'm just trying to think of it as just another race, which means not putting too much pressure on myself.

"I'm physically and mentally prepared, but I try not to think of it as something special."

It is an attitude she is hoping she can take into the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where she will be hunting for an elusive Olympic gold medal.

"I've been working really hard this summer, training - [doing] a lot more physical training.

"I have to keep training hard and keep focused, not just on the Olympics . . . and keep the momentum going to the end [so] when I go to the Olympics, hopefully, I'll be skiing well.

"I won in four disciplines in the World Cup - in a perfect world it's possible to get five, but I'm just hoping for one.

"I've never won an Olympic gold medal but it's my main goal.

"I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself."

During the Winter Games, Vonn will be competing in all five disciplines - the downhill, super G, giant slalom, slalom and super combined - but it was the downhill she was most looking forward to, where she was likely to reach speeds of up to 130kmh.

"I just love going fast. It's like an adrenalin rush. Doing downhill is a really unique feeling."

Vonn said the US team's training camp at Coronet had been "awesome" with the snow still in good condition.

"We definitely had a couple of really, really good days, with some ice.

Coronet has been working so well, with our team trying to get the best race conditions that we can; simulating racing conditions with the training.

"It felt a little bit warm towards the end of our camp, but the beginning was awesome."
