Queenstown adventure sports retailer Outside Sports has secured a deal which will see its stores in Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau become exclusive stockists of top international bike brand Specialized.

The United States brand with a global following has a range of bikes including road, mountain and down-hill bikes, as well as accessories and technical components.

Outside Sports purchasing manager Neil Proctor said all bike stores in the Southern Lakes had been vying for access to Specialized bikes over the past six months.

"We're definitely celebrating that Specialized has chosen to partner with Outside Sports.

"It's a huge compliment and a great reflection on our bike departments' focus and commitment to all aspects of biking in the region," he said.

As part of the deal, Specialized was the only bike brand which would be stocked at Outside Sports.

"We'll now stock a much bigger range of Specialized bikes and parts and accessories than we have been able to do in the past and we'll be catering for all budgets."

Mr Proctor said cutting out the middle man, with Specialized international bringing bikes directly into New Zealand, meant prices had dropped by up to 20% on some models.

"It also means they've been able to bring in the entire international range, something they haven't been able to do in the past.

Mr Proctor described Specialized as at the top of its game, with its professional teams winning the Tour de France and being named world champions in downhill racing.

"The research and development they do for their pro cycling teams is second to none."
