A $50,000 temporary building should be secured to help ease overcrowding woes for staff at the Wanaka police station.

A "business" case has been put to police national headquarters in Wellington for temporary accommodation to house the six extra police staff for Wanaka.

Otago Police business services manager Ricky Collins said the request for extra buildings for the Wanaka station was the only one of its kind across the region - "at this time".

The extra staff and resources allocated to Wanaka were part of the government scheme to increase police staff by an additional 1000 recruits, he said.

The business case was put forward to National Headquarters about six weeks ago.

A formal reply was still forthcoming, but "there are no issues with any waiting period", Mr Collins said.

The bid for funds and the temporary buildings at Wanaka were "one of many" requests put forward by policing areas from around the country.

Alexandra's police station has undergone renovations to make room for the 10 extra staff the district has been allocated.

A "long-term" solution to overcrowding blues at the Wanaka police station was still "up in the air", Mr Collins said.

A decision could not be made to building a new police station until sites had first been identified, and then considered.

It was too soon to say when that would begin, but he predicted a working party would start on the project next year.
