What a hoot

Local snapper Sam Gold’s hours of waiting patiently in a car have paid off.

Gold’s stunning image, ‘Owl on Watch’, was last Friday named the overall winner of the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association Arrowtown Photography Competition, announced at the opening of the Bayleys Art Exhibition at Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum.

The competition invited photographers to capture the unique beauty and spirit of Arrowtown and its surrounds — judges Todd Weeks and Leigh Jeffery, both Arrowtown locals, were particularly impressed with the level of creativity this year.

Of Gold’s snap, taken from Whitechapel Rd, the pair describe it as a "fabulous shot" with "great centre placement composition".

"The exposure is lovely and sharp and it’s a wonderful illustration of a photographer being in the right place at the right time and, undoubtedly, being very stealthy and very patient."

All the winning images will be on display at the museum until May 17, alongside the Bayleys Art Exhibition, which is on display till May 24.

Exhibition award winners, as judged by guest artist Niki Jackson, are:

• Berry & Co Merit Awards: Carol Saxby; Jeanne Cooper

• Arrowtown Creative Arts Society Merit Awards: Spike Wademan; Nigel Buchanan

• Arrowtown Autumn Festival Young Artist Award: Annabelle Sinclair

• Lakes District Museum Ceramic Award: Robert Franklin

• Millbrook Innovative Use of Materials Award: Barbara Dawson

• Berry & Co Premier Applied Art Award: Zdena Kaspar-West

• Print Central Best Local Painting Award: Jenny Chisholm
