Threads pull artists together

A red thread links the works of 13 Central Otago fibre artists who are collaborating for an exhibition in Wanaka during the Festival of Colour in April.

"A Common Thread" is one of several locally organised exhibitions collaborating with the festival and has been organised by Central Otago Outside The Square (Coots).

The artists have set themselves a challenge to each come up with a piece inspired by architecture in a black-white-grey theme. Each also had to use the common red thread and confine their work to 16.5cm by 6cm.

Artist Jeanette Gillies explained at a workshop in Wanaka the red thread brought out the detail in the black-to-white theme and was the symbolic colour for nomads.

It is Coots' fifth exhibition and its second with the festival. The artists formed Coots several years ago to bring Central Otago fibre artists together every two months for workshops, critiques and challenges.

They used many media but were all connected by their love of fibre and textiles, Mrs Gillies said.

The exhibitors are Jeanette Gillies, Janice Jones, Pamela McGeorge and Anne McNeill (all Wanaka), Jenny Taylor (Garston), Alison Naylor, Jan Crawford, Wendy Ward (all Queenstown), Amanda Hasselman (Glenorchy), Jenny Greer, Beverley Williamson and Pat Hewitt (all Alexandra) and Angela Meecham (Lawrence).

• "A Common Thread" will run daily at the Grand Mercure Oakridge Resort from 10am-4pm, April 12-17.
