Lake Hawea fire chief Doug Brenssell said late spring fire conditions were approaching extreme. A fire ban is expected across the region soon.
Two fire appliances attended the blaze, a permitted burn-off, which sparked a subsequent scrub fire across farmland near the township's cemetery yesterday morning.
Lake Hawea brigade station officer Nick Davis said the fire permit holders had called for help "very early", which meant appliances were on site quickly.
A tanker from Luggate was called to replenish water supplies for the two fire appliances. Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 10 minutes, Mr Davis said.
