Wanaka Ride-Share has been launched so residents of Wanaka and the surrounding communities of Hawea Flat, Lake Hawea, Albert Town and Luggate can share transport around the district.
Sustainable Wanaka manager Sophie Ward said the Wanaka Ride-Share initiative was selected as the winning sustainable idea from a competition held at last year's Wanakafest.
Project co-ordinator Ieuan Davies and Ms Ward have launched the scheme with assistance and funding from community associations and the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
Public transport in the Upper Clutha is almost non-existent.
Mr Davies said the new scheme will provide an alternative to using private vehicles, giving residents greater choice for their travelling needs.
"It will also allow people to take an active part in reducing their carbon footprint . . . while reducing the number of single occupancy vehicles that use our roads."
Designated pick-up and drop-off areas have been marked around the different towns.
"The signs are easily visible from the road so drivers can see when there is someone waiting for a lift," Mr Davies said.
There is an incentive for drivers to stop as their new passengers are strongly encouraged to contribute money towards the cost of the fuel used in the journey, he said.
Mags Helles, of Lake Hawea, says that she spends up to $50 a week travelling to and from Wanaka for work and recreation.
"I would gladly cut my fuel bill in half by picking someone up or leaving my car at home," she said.
