Volunteers to tackle wildings

The next wilding pine day is set for Monday and the call for volunteers has gone out.

Queenstown Hill will be the battle ground once more in the ongoing war against the introduced pines which spread and suffocate native biodiversity.

Nomad Safaris will supply transport, some tools and refreshments when volunteers gather at the tourism operator's depot on Industrial Pl at 1.30pm.

"We have made a big impact up there and I am determined to finish a particular area we have been working on," Nomad Safaris driver-guide Fran O'Connor said yesterday.

"We will be back in town by 5pm so people can pick up children from day care," she said.

Ms O'Connor won a Heart of the District award for her services to the environment and heritage last week.

The 73,000ha of Wakatipu land infested by pines was estimated to cost $5.7 million to control, the public-private Wilding Conifer Group said. Those interested in helping should ring (03) 442-6699.
