Next year's Winter Games NZ could bring $50 million in direct spending to the Otago economy, games chief executive officer Arthur Klap says.

Mr Klap, who is working from Snow Sports New Zealand offices in Wanaka, explained the economic benefits of the games to members of the Wanaka Chamber of Commerce last night.

Speaking before last night's meeting, Mr Klap said it was difficult to translate how a major event might translate into benefits for the owner of a bar or a restaurant on Ardmore St.

He acknowledged the economic benefits from an event were difficult to calculate as there were so many factors to consider.

"But, obviously, it is interesting to know what is in it for them," he said.

The three issues to consider were direct spending in and around the event, the benefits that followed later as a result of a higher profile, and the value of repeat events every two years, he said.

The Ministry of Economic Development had commissioned an economist to look into the benefits of the Winter Games for Otago and New Zealand.

About 800 athletes and 300 officials were likely to attend the event.

Average daily spending per person could be about $300.

The economic formula added the estimated amount spent by international and domestic visitors to the amount to be spent by event organisers ($3.5 million) and deducted anything that would have been spent anyway.

Because of tourism factors in Otago, a multiplier of 1.8 per dollar could then be applied, Mr Klap said.
