However, with the second round starting this Saturday, captain Ryan Egerton still believes they can give the playoffs a crack.
"We just need some boys to stand up a bit more and take some ownership.
"We seem to have a few passengers at the moment, which is a bit of a shame, but hopefully we can change that coming into round two and the coaches will have us raring to go, hopefully."
Fortunately, they play bottom-placed Matakanui Combined this Saturday, who they beat 66-15 in their season-opener, however this time they play them at Omakau.
"They’ve had a couple of unlucky results, but we’re going over there with a must-win attitude."
Egerton says they also need to tip up a top team like Upper Clutha or Wakatipu at home to make the semis.
"But we’ve done it before, so I’m 100% confident we can give it a crack."
Egerton himself returns from injury this Saturday along with Tom Grandiek, while the well-performed Ben Sisson’s injured and unlikely to return.
Meanwhile, the Wakatipu Prems have a bye this weekend and a chance to lick their wounds after their disappointing 17-10 White Horse Cup loss to Upper Clutha in Queenstown last weekend.
With a penalty equaliser four minutes from the end, Wakatipu had a chance to hold on to the cup, but their coach Jordan Manihera afterwards said they were "pretty lucky" to have even had that opportunity.
In better news for the club, the Wanderers beat Collegiate 24-22 in Invercargill last Saturday, though Wakatipu Women lost 36-5 at home to Pioneer Women.
