Glenn Reid, or "Scooter" to anyone who knows him, has been helping out the Queenstown community for more than 20 years.

He received a civic award at this year's Queenstown Lakes District Council Heart of the District awards for his contribution to the community.

"It was a bit of a surprise ... I didn't know I was getting [the award] or I wouldn't have turned up. I'm not a huge fan of being in the spotlight. I like being behind the scenes," he said.

Most of his work "behind the scenes" is unpaid.

Brendan Winder, who nominated Mr Reid for the award, said: "His motivation, expertise and enthusiasm are an inspiration to all around him. Without Scooter, several events, teams, shows and functions ... would not happen. He is a deserving candidate."

Mr Reid (38) has been club captain of the Wakatipu Rugby Club for the past two years, but has been heavily involved in the club since he was a teenager.

"As club captain, I organise all the games, transport and day-to-day operations. I make sure the coaches have everything they need. I look after the players' welfare."

He is also manager of the Pelicans Cricket team.

"I love being busy and clubs don't run themselves. Someone's got to do it. In sporting clubs, there's always a core two or three people that do plenty," he said.

An electrician, he offers his technical expertise free to Queenstown theatrical performances, including school productions.

He is a life member of Showbiz Queenstown and has been involved in every production since 1988.

"I mainly look after the technical side. I've been technical manager, production manager, technical director. It's looking after the lighting and sound," he said.

He is also a keen volunteer for the winter festival, helping install lighting and power to temporary venues and market vendors - and also as a general handyman.

"I look after the power, but I also get stuck in to what ever needs to be done, traffic management, anything. I'm a problem solver. If stuff breaks, I fix it," he said.

"I love being involved and busy. I enjoy it, I wouldn't do it otherwise. It's just part of being a member of the community."

"Sometimes it can get tiring and I love having a day off so I can do nothing, lie on the couch and read a book. But I get bored pretty quick and need to be doing something."
