Nominations for the upcoming Wanaka Community Board by-election are  open.

Voters will get to choose a new board member after deputy chairman Quentin Smith was elected as a Queenstown Lakes district Wanaka ward councillor last month. As three seats on the community board are reserved for Wanaka ward councillors, a new by-election needs to be held to fill Mr Smith’s old seat. The by-election will be held on November 3.

Nominations close at noon on September 7.

Electoral officer Jane Robertson said the Local Electoral Act stated a by-election must be held within 89 days of the electoral officer being notified of the need for an election, which happened on August 7.

The general election on September 23 had no bearing on the date of the by-election, Mrs Robertson said.

Former Queenstown Lakes district councillor and board member Jude Battson has said she will run for the empty seat on the board.

It will be the third by-election voters in Wanaka have participated in this year and is expected to cost about $30,000.
