An exhibition of 12 works by abstract painter Gretchen Albrecht, ‘Over the Hills and Far Away’, will open this coming Tuesday at Arrowtown’s NMG gallery.
Director Nadene Milne says Albrecht is a foundational figure in New Zealand’s modern art history, with her work appearing in public collections in Australia, the United States and England as well as New Zealand.
The exhibition consists of eight paintings on copper and four "hemisphere" paintings — on half circle-shaped canvases — all produced by Albrecht in the past year, Milne says.
The gallery has represented the 82-year-old Aucklander for the past 20 years.
"We've had numerous shows and conversations with her over those two decades."
The opening will be preceded by the screening at Dorothy Browns Cinema — next door to the gallery — of a documentary about Albrecht’s life and work, Reflections, which was produced by the Auckland Art Gallery in 2006.
- Opening of Over the Hills and Far Away’, NMG Arrowtown, December 16, 8pm, preceded by the screening of Reflections at Dorothy Browns Cinema, 6.30pm.
