Police are renewing calls for information, as they struggle to find out where a foreign man who died near Queenstown was staying.

Police responded to a sudden death incident on Saturday, October 22, in Sawpit Gully where Wai Ming Lai (51), of Hong Kong, died on a walking track.

A statement said officers making inquiries on behalf of the coroner have located his next of kin.

Investigators were still trying to establish his last movements, including where he may have been staying. Police also wanted to find his luggage, consisting of a large silver hard-shell suitcase, and it was expected it would be at his accommodation.

Mr Lai is believed to have arrived in Queenstown on October 18 or 19, and may have paid in cash, the statement said.

His death remains unexplained and was possibly due to medical causes.

It is not being treated as suspicious.
