A group of Queenstown business leaders are backing Whoosh, a transport company billed as an "Uber in the sky" .

Representatives from NZSki, Remarkables Park, Skyline, Queenstown Airport, Technology Queenstown and Queenstown Resort College are undertaking a feasibility study and "consenting pathway" for the staged network of autonomous electric vehicles, running on cables and rails above Queenstown.

The initial focus of the network is along Frankton Rd, from the Queenstown CBD to Queenstown Airport, through and around Remarkables Park to The Remarkables ski area transport hub, south of the Kawarau River.

According to a media statement, the group has also "opened discussions" with Southern Infrastructure Ltd, the company proposing the Queenstown Cable Car.

Last month, Southern Infrastructure's cable car plan was referred to the government's fast-track process.

Group spokesman Matthew Day said congestion in the resort was affecting daily commutes, business productivity and the visitor experience.

"It has real costs for locals and the town’s reputation - and there is an urgent need to explore new approaches alongside traditional public transport options."

He said the businesses involved all depended on Queenstown functioning well, which gave them the "incentive and responsibility to help progress practical solutions".
