A garment produced by Wakatipu High students depicting how Maui fished up the North Island — ‘The Rise of Te Ika-a-Maui’ — was overall winner of the recent Otago/Southland schools’ TOI wearable arts awards.

Pictured modelling it is year 10’s Michi Lamond, who teamed up with fellow students Alisa Pekhtereva, Anja Daymen and Iman Shahbaz.

The garment also won ‘excellent garment construction’, while students who created ‘Currency Couture’ won two awards and those behind ‘Modern Growth’ and ‘Te Ahi Marie’ won one each.

Meanwhile, also in Invercargill, Wakatipu High came third out of 11 Otago/Southland schools in the performing arts competition, Showquest.

Twenty-four students put together ‘The Decision is Ours’, following the issues facing Queenstown with the environment.
