Hot tip: North of Bombay

North of Bombay heads South to the Pig and Whistle Pub, Queenstown, to play a range of exotic and eccentric instruments for free next month.

The group of eight ukulele musicians plays six-string, baritone, bass, concert, soprano, tenor and banjo, plus melodica, glockenspiel, African drums, flutes and tin whistles for good measure.

North of Bombay formed in 2009 and performed in Auckland.

It embarks on a tour of concerts and workshops in the Southern Lakes, Alexandra, Dunedin and Invercargill next month.

The C-Change duo of Clare McCormack and Caroline Zeeman wrote most of the band's original material, such as Poncho Rae, Tropical Waiheke and Misty Blue, which was inspired by the scenery of the West Coast.

Original material was also supplied by bass player Tony Ramsay, who is the leader of Auckland jazz band Roundhouse.

The orchestra plays at 5pm for free.
