Man on wilful damage charge after car window smashed

A man faces a wilful damage charge after punching a car in Queenstown on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old was arrested on Coronation Dr after a member of the public witnessed him punch and kick a vehicle on Church St, breaking its wing mirror and smashing a window, about 11.30pm.

A police media spokeswoman  said the man needed medical treatment after the  incident.

"He significantly damaged one [vehicle] and broke a window.  He was observed hitting and kicking parked vehicles. He has punched the left wing mirror of a parked vehicle causing the mirror to smash and fall off and cause cuts to his hand."

She confirmed the owner of the vehicle had been notified.

The man will appear in the  Queenstown District Court today. Also on Saturday, a 22 year old man was arrested and charged with careless driving and having  excess breath alcohol  after his car collided with a parked car on Stanley St at 10.20pm.

"He has crashed into another car, causing considerable damage. He was intoxicated but waited at the scene for police to attend."

The 22-year-old will also appear in court today. Police are urging members of the public to come forward after a car was stolen from a Frankton Rd property  at 8.15pm, also on Saturday.

"The victim heard a noise outside and saw his car being driven off ...  Anyone who saw suspicious behaviour in that area should contact police as we are looking for witnesses."

The car was found at 9.15am yesterday on the boat ramp at Frankton Marina "partially submerged".

The police spokeswoman  confirmed the owner had left keys in the silver Honda Accord.

She reminded Queenstown locals to secure vehicles when they are not being used.

Earlier on Saturday, police responded to reports of a car accident on Goldfield Heights. She confirmed a 22-year-old man was arrested at 2pm and charged with  careless driving.

"He crashed his car into a parked car. His car came to a stop on its roof after the collision."

He will appear in the  Queenstown District Court today.
